LOEWE framework

The Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) has been established in 2008 within the framework of the Hessian initiative for scientific and economic excellence (LOEWE). LOEWE is an initiative for supporting the development of scientific and economic excellence in Hesse. With this funding program, the government of Hesse provides initial funding which is meant to allow universities and research institutions in Hesse to specialize and to further shape their scientific profile. Furthermore, this initiative supports a stronger interconnection between science, non-university research and business. Another aim is to establish a basis for new research institutions within Hesse which will be funded jointly by the German government and the states (Länder).

After two funding periods (in total 6.5 years) in the framework of the LOEWE, the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre (BiK-F) has been integrated, after an excellent evaluation by the German Council of Science and Humanities and the Joint Science Conference (GWK, scientific advisory body to the Federal Government and the Länder) , from 1.1. 2015 under the name "Senckenberg Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre" into Senckenberg and thus as well into the Leibniz Association.

BiK-F is one of the first and the largest of 39 LOEWE research projects.

These have joined forces under the name ProLOEWE and maintain a common site about their activities.
