On both the regional and European level the invasive plant Ambrosia artemisiifolia L. is of particular concern. Originally from North-America, Ambrosia artemisiifolia is a neophyte in many European countries and has recently spread dramatically in Central Europe. Since the pollen of the species is highly allergenic, its occurrence is associated with serious health problems for the human population.
Within this project we investigate relevant aspects of the ecology, population biology and dispersal biology of this species. Our goal is to determine the factors which are responsible for its recent spread in Europe. Furthermore our studies will contribute to develop a system which would allow predictions about where health problems due to Ambrosia artemisiifolia are expected to arise.


- Analysis of differences in growth, biomass accumulation, flowering phenology and seed maturity within European Ambrosia populations from different sites under standard conditions.

- Investigations on germination characteristics of North-American and European populations under a temperature gradient.

- Modelling the ecological niche and the potential range shift under climate change (cooperation with BiK-F Projekt B 1.4)

- Development and parameterization of a spatio-temporal explicit modell for Ambrosia artemisiifolia to characterize the influence of climate change on pollen release and seed maturity.
